Google broke the news on 10th August 2015 that India-born Sundar Pichai is going to replace Larry Page as the company’s CEO. And the company is going to be the part of a larger entity known as Alphabet(abc.xyz). Interestingly, Sundar Pichai has done a gigantic gamut of work in his career before joining Google. Do you know what that is? Let’s find it out right away.
Early Life of Sundar Pichai
Born in Madras (at present Chennai), Tamil Nadu on July 12, 1972, Pichai (Pichai Sundararajan) went to Jawahar Vidyalaya school that is located in Ashok Nagar, Chennai and completed his Class X. Then, he went to Vana Vani school that is located in the IIT campus in Chennai to complete his Class XII.
Pichai earned a degree in B.Tech Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and went on to pursue MBA and MS degrees despite his professors’ recommending him to pursue a PhD at Stanford University.
He did his MS in Material Sciences and Engineering from Stanford University and did his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. In the University, he was honored with the name of a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.
Personal Life of Sundar Pichai
Pichai is married to Anjali Pichai whom he dated in India and has two kids (a son and a daughter).
Sunder Pichai Before Google
Pichai worked in management consulting at McKinsey & Company and in engineering and product management at Applied Materials before joining Google.
After Joining Google
He joined Google in 2004 and became the main thrust behind the Google Chrome browser and the Chrome OS. He is also known to have worked on renowned products, such as Toolbar, Google Pack, and Google Gears before Google Chrome was launched. Nonetheless, it was actually the success of Toolbar that propelled Pichai’s career in Google and got him noticed, as Google observed the significant increase in the number of user searches. Eventually, the successful response made Google believe that they should have their own Web browser.
Growth of Google Chrome
Pichai led innovation and product management of Google’s client software products including Chrome OS and Google Chrome. He is cited as the man responsible for taking Google’s Chrome browser and OS forward. He was anointed as the Vice President of product development in 2008 and put forth the Chrome browser. The time around 2008 was prominent for Pichai because people began noticing him more at Google presentations. And in some time, he became a known Google face. By the year 2012, he became the Senior Vice President of Chrome and apps.
Pichai Became Android Chief
Pichai was recognized as a renowned personality all across the world when he replaced Andy Rubin in the year 2013 to become the new Android chief. As a matter of fact, Pichai joined Google at the same time when Rubin introduced Android in Google by means of acquisition. Although Rubin had already developed Android to quite an extent for around ten years, still Larry Page wanted Pichai to take on the role of the chief to help push Android even more.
Ties with Android One and Samsung
Pichai is known to have kept seamless ties and partnerships with partners including Samsung and Android One. In addition, he even launched the initiative of Android One in India by getting together and forming a contingent with local manufacturers, such as Spice, Micromax, and Karbonn.
Potential CEO Candidate for Microsoft
Pichai was rumored to be one of the crucial candidates for being reckoned for the CEO position of the company, which of course later went to Satya Nadella – an Indian-American business executive.
Do You Know?
There are seven Indian CEOs at big US brands or companies at present.

- Dinesh Paliwal: The current Chairman, President, and CEO of Harman International Industries.
- Francisco D’Souza: The current CEO of Cognizant.
- Shantanu Narayen: The current CEO of Adobe Systems.

The popular site The Wall Street Journal has shared an article explaining Why America’s Top Technology Jobs Are Going to Indian Executives that clearly defines why the Indian Managers are succeeding the technology area.
End of 2014
Pichai became the Google Product Czar along with all product heads by the end of the year 2014. The only exception was YouTube’s Susan Wojcicki who would report to Pichai.
The Dynamic Rise of Pichai in Google
As per the various news reports and profiles, Pichai is known to be a tremendous team player and one who can effectively handle strict negotiations.
The Information points out that Pichai would wait for hours outside Marissa Mayer’s office when he used to report to her to ensure that his team’s performance scores were always top-notch. Marissa Mayer is now the CEO of Yahoo. Also, his good nature and the fact that he retained the best talent in his team have helped Pichai tremendously.
Evidently, Pichai became Larry Page’s right-hand man and even accompanied Page when he was trying to attain WhatsApp, as per the report on the Information. Another profile on BusinessWeek put forth that Pichai was the one leading the negotiations at the time when Google and Samsung’s relationship had gone on a merry-go-around when Samsung launched its own Magazine app with the Galaxy Note 3.
Conclusion
The accomplishments of Sundar Pichai are surely undeniable and commendable. And for India, his promotion to be the CEO of Google (IT giant) means so much. After Satya Nadella, Pichai has become the 2nd Indian man to head one of the most renowned technology organizations in the world.

Hi Atish
Very inspirational, motivational and equally informative post.
I earlier read quite a lot about him but the way you put forth the info is the one which I really want to know and that is called feeding the info hungry people with right recipe.
Rest of the world may want to know how he got this position but my concern was how he got that monumental position despite being an Asian or rather South Asian or more specifically an Indian.
At the time of departure of British rulers could anyone had a modicum of thought that the country which they are leaving would produce the people who would lead the top technology companies of their assets.
Thanks a lot for sharing such a lovely post.

Adam Barton
Hi Adam,
Thanks for reading.
Have a great day.
Sundar pichai’s growth is an ideal growth. To be successful, one must face the hardships and work on ground level and understand loopholes. This is what Google’s new CEO has done in his entire life.
His ability to generate business from nothing is exceptional. Bringing Android one to India and opening gates for more mobile app developers was a masterstroke that only he is capable of doing.
We wish him all the success and hope to see him take Google to new heights, though it is already on the top. But to sustain is a big challenge.
Hi dear,
Glad to see your Success, Asian and especially Indians have a big talent but the resources and opportunities may be not enough but Mr. Pichai break the bank, I really appreciated.
Cheers
