Things to do Before Writing a Post

A Long time ago I wrote a post “Things to do after writing your post” which has gotten good response from readers. Today while going through my old posts on TTW I found this one and that made me think to write another post entitled Things to do before writing a post. So I sit to pen down my thoughts on this topic which would be a good read for all.

Before I start writing this post I want you to take a note: this is how we can get ideas for our next post. Yes, this post idea I got from an old post, right? So you can do the same as well.

Okay coming back to the today’s post – Things to do before writing a post

There are many things you should keep in mind and do before you start writing your next blog post.

Research and Read

When you decide a topic to write, your first step should be finding information on that topic first and to do that try searching in Google and make a list of 4-5 resources. Then do read them with concentration and collect the facts & information.

Why I am asking you to read when you are ready to write?

Yes, reading is must before you write because if you will write without knowing what others have already said on that particular topic then your post might look stale but if you do read them all to get ideas then you can intermix your thoughts & ideas with what you just read, you’ll be able to write a masterpiece which neither will seem stale or outdated.

Try it, I am sure you will enjoy writing after doing this and your readers will enjoy reading as well.

Think seriously about the particular topic

Now you have the topic and few references to get ideas, it’s time to think deeply on the topic with full concentration. Yes, sit alone and give a thought to your topic as how you should start? How you shod u structure and then finish the post? Also, what will be the examples to make the post clearer to the readers?

This might sound a little monotonous task but it’s indeed important to think over it in the beginning so that you may not have to stop writing in the middle and then think what should be the next line?

Research Keywords

Keyword research is one of the most important tasks if you are concerned to get organic traffic. It simply means to find out the keywords which are getting most searches in SEs daily.

You may use Google keyword planner tool to research few good keywords and then while writing you can sprinkle those into your post and in the post title. It is important to have high search queries in the post in order to get traffic from search engines.

I recommended Keyword planner tool because as most of the searches come from Google only hence it’s good to target Google. You may use other keyword tools if you want to focus more on other SEs.

Disconnect the Internet

Finally you have everything which is needed to start writing. But there is one more thing which leads to distraction, i.e. Internet! Yes, Internet can be very distracting while writing especially when you have opened the social networking sites and chat windows.

So that to do distraction Free writing, Disconnect the internet connection as you already have everything offline which you need to write the post. This is the reason I said to research on the topic in the very start so that you would not be checking out the resources in the middle of writing.

Now all set! Start writing your post!

  • Good post to write better Atish 🙂

Even, you might be wondering if I says that am exactly following the writing concepts which you’ve noted down here. Yes, I never write any post without doing proper research and with little KW research. Moreover, I wanna offer basic and enough details in the post and these helps me to get good readership for my blog posts.

Thanks for sharing your valuable writing suggestions and opinions through this post, hope it would educate the bloggers to write better 😛

Please keep writing such things as I always like to read your real involvements 🙂

  • Getting topic idea to write for our readers is one of the difficult task but sometime it can be very easy if one will follow the above mention tips. 🙂

And yes social media is one of the most distracting technology I have ever come across 🙁 It’s hard but I have to take strict action on this.

    Thanks for sharing this tips.

  • Hi Atish,

These are words of wisdom! Before we write a post it is always a good idea to catch up on some reading. Whenever I learn something new, I like to share it on a post and most people do like that.

I favor your suggestion to turn off the internet while you write. It will ALWAYS distract you. It is a habit we all have to put into place.

    Your suggestions are fantastic!

  • Hi Atish
Again you came up with descent article.
As you had mentioned about Google keyword planner tool , i would like to tell you that its the best for keyword researching tool, commonly known as GOOGLE AD WORD.
Thanks for sharing such a nice article.

  • Hell Atish,

All your four writing suggestions are very useful specially the first one Research and Read. Can we also add purpose of writing in this ? Thanks for sharing your suggestions with us .

    • Yea why not? You can share about the goal of writing the post. Mainly the goal or purpose of the post is to educate your readers so you can always write an intro section where you can discuss the purpose.

  • I like the “disconnect” the internet part. i thought i was the only one who is heavily distracted when i have in internet on, i keep checking my Facebook and twitter which takes me about 3 hours writing one post

  • Atish truly said ..the disconnection of internet is the most important one wrt me I guess. The moment I start writing something, I turn to research and end up doing other things than the one mentioned 😛 .

Total waste of energy , efforts and precious time 🙁

I will get back to you once I fix on this bad habit and please keep writing from your experience like this so that it could give a boost to readers like me 🙂

  • Hello Atish – Thanks for detailed post on what we need to do before starting a post. My work flow is I keep getting ideas and immediately I create a draft post for it with just a title so that It stays in the list. The next step is I pick up one of the ideas that I have noted down and I do research on that topic and once I have gathered relevant information I pen it down in the post with my thoughts and in the writing process optimize it with keywords suitable for the post. Thanks again for sharing your tips.

    • Thats a good way as well Jayashree. Your way is something you always can do whenever you get something draft it and when you sit you can make a topic and then write it. Thanks for this. Keep coming.

  • Another important topic, It is always INTEREST is the key and “preparation” on that topic comes second. Thanks for your insightful post

  • Hey Atish,

Really awesome tips . some of them are regularly followed by me. But few things I just come to know by your article.
    Thanks for sharing it.

    Ritul Gangwar

  • Exactly, while writing always disconnect the internet because it can distract a lot which would destroy your post structure(may be).

I loved the way you have started this post. Keep it up.

    • Yea people end with nothing sometimes when they leave writing to check social notifications and all. so internet should be disconnected to better productivity.

  • Hello Atish,
I think you’re right. Shutting off the Internet as well as all distracting devices is important to the craft of writing well. If I didn’t so it, i wouldn’t accomplish much.

    Have a great week!

    • Thanks William,

Yes internet wastes time and you are not able to finish the post if you are simultaneously using internet. Keep coming. Have a great week too mate.

  • Hi Atish Ranjan! You are absolutely right. Research is one of the most important work that has to be done before writing a post. It makes your post fresh and more interesting. Sometime it gives you more ideas and reason to add more use paragraph into your article.

One more thing I would say, “Before writing an article, one need to consider how his post can be useful for the reader. Will the visitor get something from your post when he leaves your site?”

    • Absolutely! I agree with you but this is understood that if you are writing for your readers then it will give something to them so I haven’t mentioned. Glad that you have added your views here. Keep coming.

  • Hey Atish,

    Ah, very wise words indeed…

I admit that I don’t do a lot of research before writing posts mainly because I’m writing from experience. I prefer sharing what I’m learning or how it’s worked out for me. Now when I need to find more information about maybe an areas I’m not as familiar with then of course I will but I think my readers appreciate having learned something from me that I’ve put into play and have gotten good results.

Although I don’t totally disconnect from everything when I write I do use a different type program so I’m not on the internet writing and I do focus all my time on what I’m writing. I don’t let anything really distract me.

Great tips though and I’m sure your readers appreciate this.

    • Thanks Adrienne for sharing what you do and how. Writing from own experience is the best thing a blogger can do but still it is always good to check out if others have already written something and what they say about.

I am glad that you don’t let anything to distract you.

  • I Always read before i got for next composition so that If I am missing something that must be included in the post, may not be skipped.
And sometime, I get involve in reading and forget that I was writing a post 😉

Well, I never focus on my new blog for organic traffic, (Keyword Research) and just writing what is coming out from the thoughts and experiences.

You have remind me the things I must focus, Atish.

Thanks for this nice write up 🙂

  • Hey Atish,
I liked the post. But I have a doubt about disconnecting internet as I research and note down the points on Evernote and then write the articles on Evernote so I have full access to my content anytime.

    • Yea if you use Evernote and need to be connected to Internet then there is no need to worry but you should turn off distracting sites like FB, Chat messengers etc.

  • Hi Atish,

Sorry for being a little late – just landed home as I was travelling, though glad I made it 🙂

Yes indeed, you mentioned the right things we need to do before writing a post – researching is important, and some of my posts take a long time to write because I go into greater details to give the apt stats and knowledge to my readers, and it also teaches me a lot along the way, so it serves dual purpose.

Using keywords is essential, though in variation, and I’m glad Google’s changed it’s strategy now and it’s certainly nicer to read posts that are more natural to read as compared to the earlier ones that one could make out are SEO enriched.

Ah…closing all distractions is something few can do, so it IS better to close the Internet when you write, unless you use some writing software or programs, which I don’t and prefer to use a strong will and not open anything when I write, you can if you want, isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing these tips with us. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    • Thanks Harleena, Glad that you liked it. Zenwriter is a nice software but still I prefer writing posts Ms Word and while writing I disconnect internet!

keep coming and share your thoughts always

  • well, nice write up Atish.. But I would like to advice newbie blogger is the same as you mentioned in the above article “Research and Read”. Thanks for sharing BTW.

  • i follow all these tips except disconnecting from internet because i write directly from wordpress dashboard.btw nice read.

  • Hello; I thought your suggestions would be very helpful to writers especially new ones that haven’t established their own routine for writing their posts. I thought the idea of turning off the intent was an especially good one. good luck with this post, max

  • Hello Atish,

I agree with your all suggestions they are play an very important role in article writing but i never hard about disconnecting internet it’s something new for me. Thanks fro sharing.

  • Hi Atish,

YOu have clearly explained your suggestions of writing a good and valuable post.A Blog can be very popular only if it has a valuable content.I thoroughly agree all your points and thanks for sharing such an information.Keeep posting

  • Others said, go for a walk before writing a post. For me, that idea looks awe-inspiring when on earth you have a writer’s block day, for lack of creative thought is one hitch. Furthermore, people dry up after a while, having exhausted all the obvious blog posts they could produce.

Of course, research and read, Think seriously about the particular topic, Research Keywords, and Disconnect the Internet sure will help you.

I consider its capacity, and Atish, sure this will assist us to be more equipped for our next post.

Your post has been shared on Kingged.com, IM social bookmarking site, enabling me to find this good piece.

    • Thanks Metz,

Your blog url is going to a not found page. Can you please confirm if the link you have pasted in website field is valid?

Thanks for reading the post. Going for walk is the best thing I think. Disconnecting internet is good for productivity.

  • I believe that every writer is aiming to write an epic post that can not only give them their desired benefits, but can also help their readers in a valuable way.

So for that fact, writers should consider some important things before writing a post. And these things that they need to consider are listed in the article above.

I agree with what you’ve said that a writer should first conduct a good research and read other blog posts that discussed the same topic that he is planning to write. With this, he can assure that his writing will have the originality.

Secondly, a good writer should also think seriously about the particular topic. He should know the topic very well, so he can deeply share information.

I would also agree with your last tip. Put away all the distractions, so you can focus on writing valuable content.

Thanks for the shared knowledge! 🙂

By the way, I found this post shared on Kingged.com

    • Research is important so that you can give some new things in the post because on one topic 100’s of bloggers do write everyday and if you want to make your post stand out of the crowd you have to write some new things rather than just stale information.

Keep coming to my blog Ann. Thanks for your visit.

  • Good Post but i would like to add one more point , We should Keep our Cell Phone on Silent mode otherwise it creates distraction much more than internet and it affects our posts directly!!

  • Great content is the key ingredient of a successful site and a successful content marketing campaign. The big question is figuring out how to create all the great content. Most of the times you just don’t know the potential of a piece of content. You can work on something that you feel very good about, you can spend a lot of time on making it the best that you can do, but then you publish it and nothing happens.

    • Hi Avner,

To create great content planning is required thus I have listed few things which needs to be done before you sit to write the post.

  • Good quality content writing is key to any post. Research and understanding of the content is most important since it’s crucial that you engage with the blog writer and even other members of the community that have already contributed to the discussion that is happening on the blogs page.

But as Avner quite rightly points out. Content is king…It still is and probably always will be in the eyes of search engines and individual poster writers alike.
