If you run your own online business or blog, then chances are you have heard of search engine optimization, also known as SEO. It’s the process of improving your site’s visibility when individuals search on an engine such as Google. However, like every form of marketing, there are different advantages and disadvantages to know before considering it.

Pro: It’s an effective way to gain trust

When you hold one of the top positions on a search results page, you immediately gain the trust of your target audience. Just think, how many times do you look past the first and second pages on Google? Even if your ranking does slip, all of that traffic will still remember you as being reliable and trusted.

Con: There is no total control

The whole goal of SEO is to get you onto that first page of results. However, there is no 100% guarantee that it will work. Since algorithms and rankings are changing daily, you can’t really predict how your website will be evaluated. It can certainly be frustrating, especially for new businesses who are still trying to understand the ins and outs of it.

Pro: It’s free (sort of)

Millions of searches are made online every single day. SEO allows you to freely tap into that traffic, as you are not actually paying for it like other advertising channels. While you can maximize its effect by hiring an agency for help, such as WebQuest. It’s still an affordable strategy to add to your marketing plan.

Con: You’ll be targeted by others

Once you develop great SEO tactics and start achieving goals, one downfall is that you will be targeted by other competitors. Everyone will start following your trends and be pushing to take over your position. Alongside this, it can be challenging to stand out if you are in a highly competitive market, with companies that “rule” the industry.

Pro: You can target the right audience

People use search engines to find the results they need for a particular issue. By appearing in the organic results rather than advertisements (that usually get ignored), you are generating the right type of traffic to your website. These individuals are looking for a solution, and your business is there to provide it.

It takes time to see results

SEO is not something that will work overnight. It takes time and careful planning to improve your website’s ranking. This is far different than other advertising, which appears once you pay for it. After a while, you may end up giving up, and all of that time you have spent will be wasted.

And that’s it. These were just some of the different pros and cons of using search engine optimization. With its great cost and ability to generate targeted traffic, it’s certainly worth looking further into it.
