LG G4 was one of the most awaited gadgets of the year 2015 and finally it is here. It is the flagship phone of LG and considered in the list of top end smartphones in the market. LG G Series is making a lot of buzz in the town and now, LG G4 is the hot topic which is trending worldwide. LG has clearly decided to give a tough competition to the high-end phones like iPhone 6, Samsung Galaxy S6 and HTC M9! 😎 Will it be able to survive the ever growing and demanding smartphone market or not? Here is my review of LG G4!
Less cluttered UI
Not as clean as the stock Android, but the user Interface of LG G4 has more matured appearance than the previous LG G series phones. When compared to LG G3, the UI of LG G4 is much cleaned up and even smoother. The fonts and the visual effects can be easily altered to tailor individual requirements! 🙂 Like several Samsung smartphones, even LG G4 offers a split screen, with which you can run two apps at a time!
Design and Looks of LG G4
LG G4 is almost identical to LG G3 in almost every aspect of design. It has a curved display and its back looks like LG G Flex but, the curved depth is not as much as G Flex. The phone looks premium and beautiful due to its less bezel size. LG G4 has followed the tradition of having all the buttons on the back side of the phone. The phone is plain on both right & left side and the volume rocker and power button is on the back side of the phone just below the camera.
The best part of LG G4 is that it offers a removable back panel that can be swapped with beautiful back variants. LG is currently offering two type of variants. There is a plastic metallic variant which features a diamond pattern. LG G4 boasts of a pure genuine leather back variant which looks attractive, premium and classic. Personally, I’m very fond of leather products as they last much longer and give you a feel of using a premium high-end thing! 😎 The phone has an excellent grip and fits perfectly in the hand. LG G4 is certainly not the best looking phone in the market but, it is better and beautiful than most of the flagship phones.
Display of the front-runner
G4 features a 5.5” LCD display with a pixel resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. It is a quad HD display with 534 ppi. The display can be considered best in the class as LG claims that it is using a brand new IPS Quantum Display. LG G4 display is definitely better when compared to LG G3 despite having the same screen size.
The best part of the display is its ability to deliver excellent contrast and colour reproduction. The screen is surprisingly brighter than its competitors and it works perfectly fine, even in bright sunlight. The viewing angles are also good and there is nothing wide of the mark with the display of the phone.
Hardware and Software #LG-G4
LG G4 is a powerhouse and pure beast! 😀 It is powered by a 1.8 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 Hexa Core SoC and supported by 3GB of RAM. The phone offers excellent multitasking and works smoothly. I tried all kind of heavy usage like high graphic games, HD videos, 4G Internet browsing but still the phone was working perfectly fine.
The only problem that I faced was – heating! 🙁 LG G4 starts heating after 1 minute of video recording. Also, while playing intense graphic games, the beast started heating in 5 minutes.
It offers 32GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 2 TB! :-O The phone comes with Android 5.1 out of the box with LG’s own UI on the top. Besides, it supports 4G and backed up by a 3000 mAh of removable battery, a feature which is not seen in high-end phones these days. I feel that LG has worked hard on its UI and since I loved the gesture controls, LG G4 is the perfect phone for me. I just need to tap the screen two times to unlock it, a feature which I got addicted.
The Best Smartphone Camera
The Camera of LG G4 made me think that it is the best device in the market. I am a big fan of phones with a stunning camera that can be used for professional photography. There are many phones that offer a massive 16 MP of the rear camera but, it is LG G4 which impressed me a lot! 🙂
Let’s talk about basic things first. G4 makes the camera experience as smooth as possible. Right from opening the camera app to shooting 4K videos, everything is perfect. You just need to double tap the volume down button to launch the camera app. Although, by default it will not only open the camera app but, will also take a snap. This feature can come handy but, most of time you will end up taking pics of your feet like I did. So, it would be good to disable this option.
The camera features a technology known as Optical Image Stabilization 2.0 which delivers excellent and super-fast auto focus. The app uses Auto mode in the default mode where you just need to tap on the screen to set the focus. You can also choose HDR option and it can get activated by itself if the situation demands.
LG G4 is currently one of the rare smartphones which uses f/1.8 aperture and a larger 1/2.6” image sensor. Thanks to the laser sensor on the back side of the phone, the focus quality of the camera is just outstanding. The camera offers manual settings for ISO, brightness, focus, exposure compensation, and shutter speed! 😎 These manual setting features are usually seen in cameras and DSLRs for capturing breathtaking images.
Panorama click – The original image is of 26mb! :-O
When iPhone 6 came into the market, I thought that it is unbeatable. However, I clicked few photos with iPhone and G4 with and without flash to compare the quality of the image. I was not surprised to see that LG G4 offers much clearer, sharp and rich in colour images.
I was also amazed to see the Dual Spilt camera feature that allows you to use the front and rear camera at a same time. I have been attracted by this feature a lot as it can come very handy in case of group photos.Split screen Image (the split screen is adjustable)
Coming to the video quality, LG G4 allows you to shoot 4K videos. However, many top smartphones claims that they offer 4K videos but, only handful of them works in real world. LG G4 did a fantastic work when I tried to shoot a 4K video. There was no stutter lag. Even-tough video zooming feature is seen in many smartphones, but zooming 4K does seem to be fun in LG G4, as it doesn’t affect the quality of the video being viewed.
It is significant to note that Max video is 4K Ultra HD (UHD) and not 4K Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI). Currently, OnePlus One is the only phone available in the market that offers 4K DCI recording.
I’ve tried testing almost all the features of LG G4 and can confidently say that the picture quality is better than iPhone 6. However, when it comes to slow motion (slomo) videos, iPhone 6 is better than LG G4 because iPhone 6 let you select the part of the video you want to slow down, unlike in LG G4, where the speed of the entire video changes. Also you have the option to select from 1/8 – 1/4 – 1/2 speed, from the speed setting.
There are very few phones in the market which delivers what they’ve committed. LG claims that with G4 you don’t need a DSLR for your images and according to me, it is true. If you are looking for a phone which can make people look twice for its looks & design and help you in boasting for the images clicked by the device, LG G4 is the best choice! But if you are looking only for the best smartphone camera, then you will have to win a battle between LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6!
