Jack Dorsey is the widely-known American Web developer who founded Twitter – a social networking site in the year 2006. Since then, he has served as the CEO of Square- a mobile payments corporation and as the executive chairman of Twitter.
Early Life of Jack Dorsey
Born on November 19, 1976 in St. Louis, Missouri, Jack was raised Catholic by his parents Marcia and Tim Dorsey. He attended Bishop DuBourg High School. While still a student, Jack became passionate about computers, communications, and programming at an early age.
At the age of 13, he became interested in dispatch routing. He got influenced by the coordination of taxi drivers, delivery vans, and others vehicles that made real-time communication with one another. At the age of 15, Jack created a dispatch software, which is still used by various cab companies at present.
Creation of Twitter by Jack Dorsey
Jack went to the Missouri University of Science and Technology before migrating to New York University. Soon, he dropped out of the college before finishing his degree. Then, he went to Oakland, California and began his own online company, where he offered his dispatch software over the Internet.
As he was working, Jack realized that he wanted something that could help him reach to a greater audience. This gave him an idea where he would make the dispatch software accessible with the ease of instant messaging.
Thus, he approached a now-inactive Silicon Valley organization known as Odeo to apply his concept. Jack had a vision where he wanted to share everything he was doing with his peers and friends in a matter of minutes. Jack joined Biz Stone- a prior Odeo executive and Evan Williams- co-founder of Odeo for creating a new organization known as Obvious.
Obvious later evolved into what we know as Twitter today. In a matter of two weeks, Jack created a simple site where a user could easily post his messages in 140 characters or less. Today, these messages are known as “tweets” in the famous Twitter world.
On the day of March 21, 2006, Jack posted the world’s very first tweet “just setting up my twttr.” Jack assumed the position of the chief executive officer of the organization. In the year 2008, Evan Williams- the co-founder replaced Jack as Twitter’s CEO, while Jack became Twitter’s chairman.
Success of Twitter before Jack Dorsey
Initially, Twitter was regarded as a tool for shallow and self-centered people, who would like sharing about their lives with users from around the world. Twitter also faced a series of jokes and mockery by many on its existence.
The famous comedian, namely Conan O’Brien even featured a comedy segment “Twitter Tracker” in his own show. The segment primarily focused on mocking the users of Twitter. With the growing interest of celebrities and CEOs from around the word, Twitter was soon able to do away with jokes and mockery.
Many celebrities began tweeting about their movies, videos, lives, and other things. This easily gave Twitter a global visibility. Shortly, Twitter’s presence started making an impact on the lives of general users.
Twitter was constantly used by people as big as Barack Obama and John McCain for updating their supporters for the US Presidential elections in 2008.
Billionaire status of Jack Dorsey
In the year 2013, Jack’s net worth grew tremendously. Twitter’s share price rose from $26 to $45 in the first day of the trading. As a result of which, the value of Jack’s 23.4 million shares made him a billionaire.
