How to Improve Your Typing Speed?

Typing speed is something I love to improve even my job is not of a typist but I love when I type faster.  I started using computer late in the year 2006, I used to type by seeing the letters one by one. Gradually I became used to of computers during my BCA studies but my typing was at worst. I could type 10 words per minute only! Yes, it was my best speed in those days. Later when I saw my friends who are able to type more than 45-50 WPM, I started to think about my speed. I set typing speed as my goal and practiced a lot by using online tools. After a lot of practice I was able to reach 20 WPM. I left practicing but time to time when I feel like typing I keep on testing my speed and gradually I noticed that I was now able to type more than 45 WPM. That was Amazing for me!

My fastest typing speed is 78 WPM till date but that is only one time I have reached ha ha! If I calculate average then I can say I can easily type more in between 55-65 WPM.

Anyway now I stop bragging about my typing speed and let’s discuss about the online tools I have used to increase my typing speed till now.

Before I share the list of tools let me tell you why should you improve your typing speed?

For me the reason is I love to work faster on PCs or laptops. And the other thing is, even you are well versed with computers, if you don’t type fast other people think that you are a novice but if you type fast, they think, OMG! How fast this guy can type? He must be an expert in computers. It’s just the mentality of few people.

I would say, improve your typing speed to feel better, to work faster and to save time.

I am sharing Top 7 online websites which can help you improve your typing speed:

1. Typingtest.com

I have used offline windows based software of this website and later I started using it online. I Played games offered in this software to set my fingers on the keyboard. This is the major tool which helped me get started. I still use this site sometimes to test speed.

7. Typeracer.com

This web site is the best choice for them who loves to win race. This website offers a race in which there are 3-4 cars are running along with your car. The fastest car wins the race and the speed of car depends on the speed you are typing. Check the screenshot, I have got the first place by typing 66 wpm.

Typeracer

These 7 websites are the best to improve your typing speed online. There are many websites but I didn’t find all of them as useful as these are. I have personal experiences with these 7 and I would like to recommend to everyone who love typing and want to increase their speed.

My recommendation to do on these sites are:

Start with playing typing games then try getting some lessons they are offering and at last test your typing skill. Do this every day for an hour at least and believe me, within a month you will notice improvement in your typing speed.

If I, who started from zero and now can type more than 70 WPM at times, then why can’t you? I am sure you can even touch 100 WPM if you devote proper time every day.

Let me know your experiences with above-mentioned websites and also share similar kind of websites.

  • Good to know your typing experiences Atish 🙂

You know, I haven’t learnt typing through any institution and was a poor typing person before my part-time blogging career. But once I get into the blogging seriously in the year 2010, I installed a software to practice typing without seeing the keyboard. I practiced somewhat to type with good speed but still struggling to type more than 40 words per minute. Sometimes I used to see the keyboard to type the special characters 🙁

Thanks for listing out some typing tools, will try to make use of any of the resources to improve my typing speed. Got my mind refreshed with this Non-tech post, keep writing 😛

    • Glad that you can type well! However, I don’t type much for work but I love speed hence I always spend some quality time with typing practice.

    • You beat me to it! I was going to mention I couldn’t type without looking down either until I started a blog. While unpopular, I think it gives me a reason to learn to type well.

Granted, I have taken a few classes, both in high school and in college, I just didn’t retain the typing skills I had developed. And I have never used one of those typing services, have just contemplated it.

  • Hello Atish bro, Awesome post. Typing speed enhancement is not just the need of bloggers but also needed by anyone who uses a computer. This also increases your confidence. I never took any such training but I would try like to try typeracer due to its fun quotient. 🙂

    • You are right! Confidence always increases when you do something good which many cannot! Glad you liked the post!

  • Hello Atish,

Typing speed is something which should be practiced by every computer user because when you improve your typing speed, you start working faster. And if you work faster you can save a lot of quality time which you can invest in some other task.

Good to see these sites listed where we can practice to improve our typing skills. Keep writing such useful posts.

  • Hello Sir Atish,

You’ve got great contents here. I’m glad to be a visitor of this blog.

I’m highly surprised about the figures i find in this article. 50-55 WPM? That sounds great. These tools mentioned must be really effective.

Of course every computer operator needs to have a high typing speed. It makes work faster and more enjoyable.
I think i will give this sites a trial. This article is worth sharing. I will simply head to my Social Media accounts and share this informative post.

  • Hi Atish,

Wow, I didn’t know that there are software tools outside there that you can use to improve your typing speed. Awesome!! Kudos to you for self-improving your typing speed.

I learned typing early on when there were no computers or when computers were new and so expensive to own one (yes, I am old). I learned it on typewriters and I was so young at that time and it progressed with time and now I am very fast with typing, I can’t see my fingers when typing and I didn’t need any tool to help me with the speed. LOL!!!

But it is always good to be in the know. Thanks for sharing these tools and I am sure it will help so many who want to improve their typing speed. Have a great day and keep up the good work.

    Be Blessed,

    Neamat

    • Nice to know that you have learnt on typewriters. When I was a kid I saw my friends’ elder brothers indulged into learning typing on typewriters but gradually it was replaced with computers so when I started working, computer was there.

Thanks Neamat for thoughtful comment. Keep visiting. Happy Diwali from my side(Hope you are aware about diwali festival)

  • Hi Atish,

Wow…I had no idea how many ways one can find to increase their typing speed! It is important to be able to have your hands fly over the keyboard as a blogger.

I learned how to type many years ago when I was in high school… I’ve always liked to write, so my speed is fast. Before the internet days, I wrote two books and snail mailed them to many different list brokers.

I do type fast and it is important so I can get my ideas down as fast as I can, otherwise I would loose them.

    What a great share Atish!
