How to create mobile-ready website or e-commerce store for a business

There is no better time to start a new business or give a new image to an existing one. The number of Internet users in emerging markets is increasing at a speedy pace; hence new opportunities appear for businesses through e-commerce. With India’s online population surpassing 350 million by the end of 2015, the growth opportunities in the short and middle run are tremendous for every venture out there.

What is uKit?

This is what the guys behind uKit, the responsive website builder for businesses, had in mind as well. Founded in March 2014 by the team behind uCoz, the most successful free website builder in Eastern Europe which hosts more than 1 million active websites. uKit is a startup with a mission to help small businesses, professionals, and startups to create easily mobile-ready presentation pages and build online stores to sell a broad range of products.

In order to create a website just go on uKit’s official page and press the Create a website button, where you will be able to register with either your e-mail address or one of your social network accounts.

# Quick glance

The first thing that strikes you after signing up is the great user experience that comes with the package. Just watch the quick video below which shows how’s like to work with this website builder:

How to create your mobile-ready website or e-commerce store?

After the successful registration, you will be able to go through the existing responsive templates and select the one that fits your business or personal profile. A very useful function is the device preview, which allows you to see how the selected template will look on a desktop computer, tablet or smartphone.

Talking about templates, all of them are tailored to small businesses and are fully responsive, meaning that they will be correctly displayed on various devices, from smartphones to tablets and desktop computers. For our test, we’ve chosen a nice looking template which can be used by a travel/tourism agency or related.

Next, you can proceed by selecting a name for your website, which will be first a subdomain.

# Features

As you are about to arrive in the friendly user interface to play with your new website’s elements, you’ll be able to quickly edit the Company’s name and address, which will automatically sync with Google Maps for an accurate display of your physical location.

This latter feature is very important, especially if you have an office or location which receives potential traffic from walk-in customers using their mobile devices, like a Restaurant, Coffee Shop, Bakery, Hairdressing salon, Travel agency, Shop, Gym, etc.

By now you should be already in the administration panel, where you’ll probably notice why uKit website builder is a smooth do-it-yourself solution, equipped with various widgets or elements like sliders, separators, content blocks or titles, which you can modify through a few mouse clicks, drags, and drops.

One eye-catching thing, compared to other site builders, is the text that can be found in the templates. The designs provided by many website builders or template providers can be found filled with texts like Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit, sed diam nonummy nibh euismod tincidunt ut laoreet dolore magna aliquam erat volutpat. “ – that’s not the case of uKit.

The proposed texts are relevant to the template’s profile and useful to the site owner, providing him with the much-needed inspiration to edit and create his own content.

On top, uKit offers the possibility to start a blog as well: when adding a new page, you just have to select ‘news’ instead of ‘page’.

There’s also an easy integration with various Social Networks, from Facebook to Linkedin, which makes your website highly social media friendly

# Ecommerce

In case you want to sell products online and have more than a mobile-friendly presentation website, uKit comes in place with an easy to use online shopping solution.

To power up your mobile-ready online store, the team sealed a partnership with Ecwid, a well-known e-commerce platform powering over 700.000 online shops, available in 45+ languages and offering over 40 payment options.

Through this easy to use solution, you will be able to integrate an online store in your mobile-ready website in no time and receive potential customers from anywhere in the world, where you are ready to ship the products you might be selling.

To activate the widget, you need to go to the Content Section from the Administration Interface and drag the Ecwid Icon to the screen. Now, you will have to register a new account with Ecwid to begin developing your online shop, through which you will be able to sell up to 10 products for free! If you’re selling to Indian customers, for example, you can easily accept payments via PayU, PayPal and more.

Also, due to the system’s architecture, the uKit powered websites are very SEO friendly, as the system generates a standards-compliant and semantic code. This means that your company website will have a good synergy with various Search Engines, especially Google itself.

You’re almost done by now but, before or after you publish the website on the internet, you can add your custom ‘name.com’, ‘name.in’or ‘name.co.in’ domain from the dashboard and make your company or personal project stand-out. In order to do this, you will firstly need to purchase a domain (if you haven’t got one already) and then change the Name Servers address from the domain interface into ns1.ukit.com and ns2.ukit.com. After that, you just need to type the domain name in the interface and press the Add button.

It might take from a few minutes to a few hours for the website to be ready with the new domain, but the waiting is worth it. Meanwhile, you can make the final adjustments, check out if the texts are correct, add the meta tags and other SEO related elements and verify how it’s displayed on every device.

Whenever you are done with your edits and want to go live, all you need to do is to press the publish button, which will make your website accessible to any visitor on the web!

Now, you are ready to receive visitors and potential customers.

Next, you can begin the promotion of your website, by registering to Google Webmaster tools.

# Pricing

Officially released in May 2015, uKit comes with a trial version, followed by a flat 5$ monthly fee, which I found being of good value. There might be some small changes in the future, but the company will probably announce it in a timely manner.

Final Words

It took the founding team close to one year to develop uKit, and the results are nothing short of impressive. The user interface is sleek, smooth and fast, making the website builder of great use for people who don’t have either the skills or time to create a responsive website.

The solution caters to businesses, startups or freelancers and, if you would like to try it on, you can create a website here. For any questions or comments regarding the system, we are ready to answer below!
