Amazon Receives Patent for Selling Used Digital Objects

Amazon is a digital marketplace for people of all sphere of lives to buy books, gadgets and other electronic items which includes the popular Amazon kindle (made my Amazon itself) and some other notable android and apple phones. The company has been in the drop-shipping business for long with track record to back them up.

Before, Amazon only sell new and used physical products such as DVDs, Books, electronics, smart phones and so many others. They do not sell used digital products because of the restriction placed by the government in the country. But according to the news arriving from GER, Amazon is on the verge of offering used digital products for customers on its platform.

The United States Patent and Trademark office in the department of commerce has recently granted Amazon patent right to sell used digital product on one of its stores.

Many websites have been talking about this patent but majority of the people does not know what the patent contains and here’s the content of the patent:

“Digital content in a personalized user store may be accessible to the user via transfer such as streaming, moving, or download.”

The statement continues further:

“When the content user no longer has interest in retaining the right to the used-digital content, he/she can move the content to another user’s personalized store when permissible.”

And immediately after the move, the used digital data will be deleted from the originating account.

What does this patent mean?

With this new patent right, user who have bought an e-book from the said Amazon store “can easily move it to other user’ personalized store with permission but the document has to be deleted from the original owner upon the transfer.”

Meanwhile, Amazon has applied for this patent since 2009 and the internet as a whole has changed tremendously ever since then when it comes to digital signing.

So, this patent looks a lot old than the recent patents.

But in context, anything that has been sold to the user or moved in the Amazon store would be subject to the actual rights granted to the real owner. And as you all know, e-books are licensed, they aren’t bought totally – so the first-sale rule does not apply here under the current legal precedent in United States.

And also, the individual who owns the right would not have total right to put the e-book in any store.
