Absolutely right.
Keyword research and analysis is vital, esp for smaller bloggers. For bigger and established blogs like mashable and techcrunch, etc which have subscriber lists running into millions, it might not make any difference at all.
How can small bloggers like you and me reach out to more people if we write on keywords which will not be looked up at all?

My experience says your content & niche plays a vital role in your adsense earning. If you really concern about your cpc do some keyword research in adwords & try to write post on keywords which have more cpc, gradually when your blog grow & your content will have more high cpc keywords your adsense earning will grow significantly.
I myself has increased my cpc from .10 cents to 25 cents applying this method.

Excellent post. I think that if you place adsense code in the right place where people can click, For example if you place Google Adsense on right side bar or middle of content then you can increase the earning from Google adsense.
Also it has been seen that some good keywords can increase your earnings as well !

My understanding is that Google is now putting more emphasis on dynamic content, however that being said it still appears backlinks play a huge part in the ranking.
